Digital Immersion

Date

March - May 2024

Role

All Roles

A college project focusing on digitally immersive experiences. In Unreal Engine 5.2, I created a garden environment inspired by the Arts & Craft movement of the late Victorian period.

This environment was subsequently rendered so it could be projected on a 360° dome and YouTube video.

Our Beloved Garden

3D asset

I wanted to create the main focus of the piece myself, so I used the National Trust property Stoneywell, which was designed by Arts & Craft architect Ernest Gimson.

In 3DS Max I made the basic shape from cubes and cylinders and once I was satisfied with how it looked, I brought it into Substance Painter to add the textures. I primarily used smart materials from Adobe, but I think some of these details were lost as they were difficult to see in the final result.

environment design

When designing the garden environment, I tried to focus on one of the main visual aspects of the Arts & Crafts movement which is symmetry, which i achieved using box hedges and walled sections. I also made a water effect for the fountain using a Niagara particle system.

I was able to test my project on Plymouth University's Immersive Vision Theatre, where I was able to receive beneficial feedback that I was able to implement to improve my project.

Like changing the backdrop or adding more moving elements.
